In her EP “Fractions of π”, singer-songwriter Katie Wellenberg shares three intimate songs inspired by Americana music as much as Spanish Flamenco and Portuguese Fado sounds.
“Demons” tells a story about the false hopes we inherit from people around us and society as a whole, “Maybe” is a bit of an angsty acoustic track with an anxiety-related theme and “Pray for me” is a restorative song about one´s faith that is sometimes boosted through the people close to us who carry us through the tough times.
The title “Fractions of π” is an allusion to the incompleteness of storytelling. “We all have our own narratives in life and those narratives are subjective and often biased and distorted. They are far from the whole truth, just fractions of that big picture truth we so wish to understand.“ says Katie. π is an irrational number with endless digits behind the comma. It is used to calculate the circumference and the area of a circle, but it will only ever conclude approximate results.
“This is what our lives’ stories are to me. Pieces or say dots that we connect and weave into a continuous thread that might help us gain some sort of “big picture” understanding of ourselves and our life´s meaning.”
Although not a physical constant, π appears routinely in equations describing fundamental principles of the universe, often because of π‘s relationship to the circle and to spherical coordinate systems, according to Wikipedia.
“When I write songs, I am in my own little universe and my intention with this EP was to share glimpses of this inner world with the outside world and the songwriting community.”
